Nov. 6 Metropolitan Community College at Kansas City
On Tuesday, Nov. 6 the State Fair Community College (SFCC) Lady Roadrunners traveled to Kansas City where they defeated the Metropolitan Community College Wolves 83-73.
The Lady Roadrunners raced to a 21-9 lead at the end of the first quarter but struggled in the second quarter, before taking a 39-36 advantage at halftime.
The Lady Roadrunners used full-court pressure defense in the fourth quarter to create easy transition baskets and secured the victory.
Sophomore guard Jazzmyn Elston of Rossville, Georgia led four other Lady Roadrunners in double-figure scoring with 20 points. Elston also led the team in steals with three. Sophomore forward Brionna Hill of Dover, Delaware registered a double-double with 19 points and a team-high 13 rebounds. Hill also led the team in blocked shots with two.
Freshman guard Nokoia White of Ennis, Texas added 13 points. Sophomore guard Farah Mesidor of Kissimmee, Florida pitched in with 11 points. Sophomore guard Sckiya Banister of Kansas City, Missouri dished out a team-high five assists.
Nov. 9 Wabash Valley College at Poplar Bluff, Missouri
The State Fair Community College (SFCC) Lady Roadrunners traveled to Poplar Bluff, Missouri on Friday, Nov. 9 to play in the Three Rivers Classic where SFCC fell to the 21st ranked Wabash Valley College Lady Warriors from Mount Carmel, Illinois by a score of 95-74.
"It was a physical game," said Bucher. "We pressed and trapped the entire game. We were able to force some turnovers and had opportunities to score. We just struggled to rebound the basketball. Wabash has a lot of size. We got out rebounded by 30. We were down by less than 10 points early in the fourth quarter and then Wabash pulled away. It was a great game. Wabash is a very good team. It was a much closer game than the final score indicated."
White led four Lady Roadrunners in double-figure scoring with 17 points. She also led the team in assists with three. Sophomore guard Monique Esbrand of London, England registered a double-double with 13 points and a team-high 11 rebounds. Mesidor and Elston added 13 points each. Hill and Mesidor tied for the team lead in steals with three.
Nov. 10 Rend Lake College at Poplar Bluff, Missouri
SFCC (3-2) closed out their portion of the Three Rivers Classic on Saturday, Nov. 10 defeating Rend Lake College from Ina, Illinois 64-51.
SFCC led 19-2 at the end of the first quarter. The 17 point advantage was largest held by either team in the contest. The Lady Warriors stormed back in the second quarter to cut the SFCC advantage to two points at halftime.
"Rend Lake kept the game close," said Bucher. "We looked tired, but we were able to take control of the game with our press in the last six minutes. I thought Jazzmyn, Nokoia, and Monique all played well."
Elston led the Lady Roadrunners with 24 points. White contributed 11. Esbrand pulled down a team-high 13 rebounds. Esbrand, White, and Elston all tied for the team lead in assists with two. Elston and freshman guard Dalen Tate of Lawrenceville, Georgia tied for the team lead in steals with four.
SFCC will travel to Vincennes, Indiana on Friday, Nov. 16 to play in the Sodexo Classic hosted by Vincennes University. SFCC will take on Vincennes University on Friday and Wabash again on Saturday.
