Lady Blazers win over Shawnee for the second time this week

ULLIN, Ill. – The Vincennes University Lady Trailblazers took on the Shawnee Lady Saints Saturday afternoon in a rematch from this past Monday, when VU won 67-60 at the P.E. Complex.

This round again went to the Trailblazers as VU picked up their third win of the week and second against Shawnee by the score of 53-50.

Shawnee got off to a fast start in the first, jumping out to a 17-13 advantage after the first 10 minutes of play.

This scoring streak that the Saints were on did not carry over into the second quarter however, with VU holding Shawnee to just five points.

Freshman Brianna Raynor came off the bench to provide an offensive spark for VU again, scoring eight points in the quarter to give Vincennes the 31-22 lead at halftime.

The two teams came out of the locker room firing on offense, as Vincennes was able to maintain their lead and head into the fourth quarter up by seven.

Defense won out in the final 10 minutes of play, as neither team managed to score 10 points in the final quarter.

Shawnee cut into the Trailblazer lead, cutting it to just a single point with under two minutes to play.

VU sophomore Amani Brown stepped up to the free throw line to sink a pair of clutch free throws and as the Shawnee three-point attempt at the buzzer went wide, VU came away with their 12th win of the season and fifth win in a row.

Vincennes was led offensively by sophomore guards Amani Brown and Reeva Hammelman.

Brown finished with a team-high 11 points, while Hammelman added 10 of her own, as well as a team-high six rebounds.

Brianna Raynor came off the bench to reach double-figures in the score column for the second consecutive game, finishing with 10 points, four rebounds and three blocks.

Sophomore Shaila Beeler finished with nine points, five rebounds and a team-high four assists for the game.

Vincennes will have another quick turnaround as they complete this stretch of playing four games in eight days when the Trailblazers host Rend Lake College Monday, March 22 at the P.E. Complex.

VU defeated Rend Lake at Ina, Ill. just 10 days ago 82-71. Tip-off Monday is scheduled for 7 p.m. eastern.
