SCC WINS DEFEATS OLNEY CENTRAL, 74-70 IN FIRST GAME OF NEW YEAR

WEST BURLINGTON - The SCC men claimed their first victory back from break Saturday night. The Blackhawks (11-5) faced the Olney Central College Blue Knights (8-4) in a rematch from their November 20th matchup in which Olney bested SCC by four points, 78-74.

Both teams started the match with slow offensive performances, with just five points being scored in the first three minutes between the two teams. Each team traded buckets down the stretch of the first half. The largest lead in the first ten minutes of the game was five points, which was held by Olney Central. The Blackhawks did not flinch however, holding the lead within reach. Olney Central displayed their ability to work inside out on offense, connecting on back-to-back kick-out threes with eight minutes to go in the half. The Blackhawks' ability to get to the free throw line in the first half helped tremendously, as they were able to enter the double bonus with 6:30 left in the first half. Southeastern reclaimed the lead 31-30 with six minutes to go thanks to a Raphael Gay two hand flush on a post entry. Olney Central would then put a run together of their own at the end of the half, taking a 41-33 lead entering the break.

The Blackhawks wasted no time in the second half, going on a 9-0 run out of the break. Throughout the second half, each team took turns making difficult shots. Each team would take turns with the lead, prior to the final push by SCC. With one minute left in the game, the Blackhawks led the Blue Knights, 70-67 with possession. A fake handoff gave Maxime Ekono an open lane to drive from the left wing, where he would take advantage and draw the help defender in the lane, just before dishing off to Raphael Gay for an emphatic slam, pushing the lead to 72-67. A few trips to the free throw line for the Blackhawks and a late three pointer by Olney made the final score 74-70, in favor of SCC.

The Blackhawks (12-5) will face John Wood Community College (8-6) next Saturday, January 13th back at home.
