The Lake Linksters Lose Historic Playoff with Parkland

GODFREY, Ill. - Rend Lake College and Parkland College today took the NJCAA Region XXIV men's golf championships where it has never been before - a team playoff.

After three rounds and 1,810 strokes, the two teams were lockstep at 905 each.

Despite making history, the Warriors were unable to secure a team bid to the upcoming NJCAA Championships after losing on the second hole of the playoff to Parkland. The Cobras will be moving on, as will tournament champion John A. Logan College.

The silver lining for The Lake is that sophomore David Griffin (Effingham) and freshman Jared Harp (Benton) made the All-Region Team and will be moving on to the national championships individually for their college. Griffin shot 73-71-73-217 for third place and Harp shot 75-76-77-228, securing his ticket via a first-hole birdie in a three-way playoff for 10th place against sophomore teammate Ryan Keller and an opponent from Southwestern Illinois College. Keller (Nashville) was deadlocked with the SWIC player through four playoff holes when it was called on account of darkness. They will tee off at 4 p.m. tomorrow to decide who will be the final DII national qualifier from Region 24.

RLC is most likely coming home a little shell-shocked after leading Parkland by nine strokes after the first two rounds, witnessing a reversal of fairway fortune and seeing the national championships slip away in a historic playoff. While Griffin's and Harp's NJCAA passes are punched, Keller's fate could be one good or bad hole away, and sophomore Elijah Sentel's (Benton) and freshman Tanner Spicuzza's (Dahlgren) 2008-09 golf seasons have ended.

Logan took top honors with a 293-284-291-868, followed by Parkland at 312-294-299-905 and RLC at 303-294-308-905. Logan's Marcello Rozo, a spring transplant from Colombia, South America, finished as the individual Region 24 champ with a 68-67-66-74-275.
