Rend Lake rallies vs. Glen Oaks
Warriors produce loads of runs late in Game 2.
Putting itself in great position to finish the second day of the baseball season with a sweep, the Glen Oaks Community College baseball team built a 5-0 lead in the top of the third inning of Saturday's Game 2 against host Rend Lake College in Illinois. The Warriors, however, had other ideas.
With a run in the third, three in the fourth, a run in the fifth and an eight-run outburst in the sixth, Rend Lake topped the Vikings 13-5 to split the day's doubleheader.
Brayden Clark went 4 ⅔ innings for the Vikings, striking out three Rend Lake batters, walking six and giving up four earned runs on four hits. Noah Reiter, Hunter Tinervia, Erick Marin and Gavin Wickham combined to finish the game.
In the third inning, Steven Drewyor led off with a ground-ball single to second. Brayden Clark singled to center and the Vikings had something cooking with runners on the corners and no outs. Jayden Hamilton drew a walk to load the bases, then Andrew Thorpe was patient at the plate and sat on the sixth pitch with two strikes for a walk that scored Drewyor.
A Peyton Simmons single cleared the bases after an error and Glen Oaks went up 4-0. Daniel Vizthum grounded out to second base for the second out but Simmons made his way home for a 5-0 advantage.
The Warriors got one back in the home half of the third before tightening the screws with three more runs in the fourth. Rend Lake tied the game in the fifth inning on a wild pitch.
And after a series of walks, wild pitches and a hit batter, Rend Lake regained all the momentum in its eight-run sixth inning.
Simmons led Glen Oaks with two hits, a stolen base and a RBI, Clark had two hits, and Drewyor and Hamilton had one apiece.
