GALLATIN, TENN. – Wabash Valley smashed five home runs in a 10-1 rout of Volunteer State in the second game of a doubleheader on Tuesday.

The win earned a split on the day for the Lady Warriors, who dropped the first game, 4-3. In that game, WVC hit two homers, bringing to seven the total on the day.

"We had some good moments, we had some bad moments," said coach Asa Deffendall. "For not playing in eight days, we hit the ball pretty well, and the pitching was pretty good for the most part. It was a good day overall."

Lily Garbett and Maci Simmons each clouted two homers. Kellene Engelhart, Katie Smith and Sydni Cosby each hit one.

In the opener, both teams scored two runs in the first inning, but Volunteer State added single tallies in the fourth and fifth to take a 4-2 lead into the seventh. Engelhart homered to narrow the deficit to one run, but the rally ended there.

Wabash Valley wasted little time in the nitecap. The Lady Warriors got back-to-back homers from Garbett (a 2-run shot) and Cosby to jump to a 3-0 lead.

The visitors added three runs in the fifth, and four in the sixth to make it 10-0 before Volunteer State (6-2) broke up the shutout with an unearned run in the bottom of the sixth to account for the final.

Garbett's second 2-run homer of the game was the featured shot in the fifth. An RBI single from Morgan Moxey that scored Cosby later made it 6-0.

In the sixth, all four runs came off the long ball. Simmons hit a solo shot, and Smith came up big with a 3-run blast.

Lefthander Lyndsi Adamson (3-0) picked up the win in the second game. The starter went five innings, striking out eight and allowing only two hits. She walked eight batters, but came through that unscathed.

Kaitlyn Bennett, who started the opener and worked four innings, came on in the sixth to cement the win in the nitecap.

Bennett (0-2) took the loss in the first game. She gave up three runs, six hits and walked two in four innings of work, while fanning two batters. Maddie Duncan came on in relief and allowed one run in two innings of work.
