BARNESVILLE, Ga. – Top-ranked Wabash Valley College (Ill.) proved to a tough opponent as a late addition to the 2021 Gordon State College baseball season as the Warriors took two out of three games in the weekend series here Saturday and Sunday.

Saturday's doubleheader started off with a bang as GSC walked off a 14-13 win in nine innings.

Trailing 13-10 heading to the eighth inning, GSC scored two in the bottom of that frame to cut the WVC lead to one and then plated the game-tying and game-winning runs in the bottom of the ninth to take the win.

GSC had taken a 6-1 lead after two innings, but WVC climbed back in it with one run in the third, four in the fourth and one in the fifth to tie it at 6-all.

WVC went ahead 11-6 with five runs in its half of the sixth inning, but GSC answered right back with five runs in the bottom half to make it a one-run game at 11-10.

WVC tacked on two runs to get the lead back to 13-10, which set up the fantastic finish for GSC as Cole Phillips (Trion, Ga. / Trion HS) took third on a wild pitch and then scored the game-winner when the throw from the catcher got away from the third baseman.

In the nightcap, GSC watched a 5-3 lead vanish as WVC scored three runs each in the fifth and sixth innings to pull away for a 9-5 seven-inning win.

Sunday's rubber game featured a nine-run sixth inning by WVC to break open a tight one-run game as the Warriors took the series 2-1.

GSC led 3-2 after four innings before WVC struck for a pair of runs in the fifth and then put the game away with the nine-run outburst in the sixth.

GSC hits the road on Friday to take on Central Alabama Community College in a 3 p.m. ET doubleheader, then returns home on Saturday to face CACC in another 3 p.m.  ET twin bill.

Attendance is limited at GSC home games with social-distance seating and face masks required.
