Israel Whiffs 8, but Chargers Fall to Volunteers in Opener

CARTERVILLE — Silas Israel (Tremont, Ill./Tremont) fanned eight batters over five innings, but the Carl Sandburg College baseball team dropped its season opener 10-0 in seven innings against John A. Logan on Friday afternoon.

Key Moment
The Volunteers (9-3), among others receiving votes in this week's NJCAA Division I rankings, struck for a five-run first against Israel on the strength of four singles, a double and a hit batsman. Three of Logan's runs came with two out in the inning.

Sandburg Standout
Israel surrendered just three hits over his final four innings of work, and the left-hander finished with eight strikeouts against only one walk. Israel threw 57 of his 84 pitches for strikes.
