Lakers go long for a sweep of Warriors

Mt. Carmel, Ill. – Lake Land took the long road to sweep past Wabash Valley on Tuesday night.

The Lakers' first two set wins were overtime rallies, before taking control of the third in regulation to finish off the Great Rivers Athletic Conference win.

Wabash Valley had its' four-game winning streak snapped in the process. The Warriors fell to 10-4 and 6-4 in the GRAC. Lake Land improved to 10-10 and 7-4.

Just when WVC looked like it had control of the first set, leading 22-18, Lake Land stormed back, using a 10-4 surge to steal away the first set, 28-26.

The Warriors regrouped after a sluggish start to the second set. A 15-5 run seemed to put the hosts in command, but there was Lake Land, again trailing 22-18, and again about to reverse course. This time, an 8-2 burst turned into a 26-24 set win and a commanding 2-0 lead in the match.

In what turned into the finale, the Lakers won five of the final seven points of the set to clinch the match with a 25-22 win.

It was only the second time this year the Warriors have been blanked in a match, the other coming against Kaskaskia. Meanwhile, the Warriors have four match shutouts to their credit.

The Warriors finish their home season with two more matches this week. Thursday, Shawnee calls at Spencer Sports Center for a 6:30 p.m. match, followed by a visit from Southwestern on Friday at 6:30 p.m.
