Prince has HR Among 3-Hit Game as Chargers Drop 2 at No. 9 Volunteers

CARTERVILLE — Payton Hankins reached safely five times on the day, but the Carl Sandburg College baseball team started a two-day spring break road trip with a pair of losses at Division I No. 9 John A. Logan on Monday afternoon.

KEY MOMENTS
• The Chargers got on the board in the top of the fifth inning as Will Prince knocked a one-out solo home run to left, cutting Sandburg's deficit to 3-1.
• The Volunteers answered back with a two-out, two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth, then scored five runs in the sixth to account for the final score.

SANDBURG STANDOUT
In addition to his fifth-inning dinger, Prince singled in the seventh and again in the ninth as the third baseman finished 3 for 4.

KEY MOMENT
• The Chargers saw their first four batters of the game reach base and collected four hits, a walk and a hit batsman in a three-run first inning. Frank Kelch forced in a run after getting beaned with the bases loaded. Kadin Spencer followed with an RBI groundout, and Mateo Pena's two-out hit to center gave Sandburg a 3-0 lead in the opening inning.
• A leadoff home run ignited a three-run first of their own by the Volunteers, and John A. Logan scored three more in the third to go ahead for good. All of the Vols' run in that frame came with two out.

SANDBURG STANDOUT
Wiegand was one of two Chargers with a pair of hits in the outing. The center fielder singled and scored in the first, added another base hit in the second and drew a walk in the sixth.
