Warriors remain perfect after sweep of Kankakee

Mt. Carmel, Ill. – The volleyball Warriors remained undefeated with a straight-set victory over Kankakee in non-conference action at Spencer Sports Center on Friday night.

WVC (3-0, 1-0 in Great Rivers Athletic Conference) is off to its' best start in the three years of the program restart following a 15-year hiatus.

Kankakee fell to 2-4 with the loss.

In the first set, WVC jumped to a 4-0 lead, then overcame a mid-game surge by the Cavaliers to win, 25-23.

The second set win by the Warriors was perhaps the most impressive of the three. Kankakee led, 13-9, before the hosts turned their fortunes around with a 9-1 run that put them on top, 18-14.

However, WVC needed to rebound a second time after the Cavs ran off six unanswered points to go back on top 20-14.

Wabash eventually prevailed, 25-23, after closing with an 11-3 surge.

The third set went into overtime, before the Warriors clinched the match sweep with the final two points of a 26-24 win.

Jacklyn Simms, a 6-foot freshman from Fairfield, helped lead the way with nine kills and two blocks at the net.

Malena Bixby had eight kills, including the second-set winner. Mariah Jones finished with eight kills as well.

Valerie Ramos Allende had 15 assists and two aces. Kassidy Drone matched her assist total.

Caelyn Nelson had 15 digs in the match as well.

Mark Colvin's team returns to GRAC play on Tuesday when they host Southwestern. The first serve is at 6:30 p.m.
