Rend Lake fends off Vikings in Game 2
Early lead for Warriors helped weather Glen Oaks comeback.
In Game 2 of Friday's season-opening doubleheader in Illinois for the Glen Oaks Community College baseball team, host Rend Lake College used a four-run lead through three innings to come away with a 13-9 victory.
The Vikings exploded for a five-run fourth inning to take the lead, but the Warriors answered with four runs in the bottom of the frame to stay out front the rest of the way. Rend Lake scored its first two runs of the game on an error in the first inning. The Warriors would tack on two more in the second.
Jayden Hamilton and Peyton Simmons singled to get things going in the fourth before Andrew Onuegbu tripled for Glen Oaks to drive in a pair of runs. Cameron Hummeston and Steven Drewyor walked, and with two outs, Brayden Clark delivered a single to right field to bring Onuegbu home. Drewyor would later score on a catching error.
Down 8-5 in the top of the fifth, Glen Oaks plated a run. Hamilton singled and later reached home on an Onuegbu sacrifice-fly. Rend Lake scored two more in response for a 10-6 advantage heading into the sixth inning.
Glen Oaks managed to put three more runs on the board in the sixth after Humeston singled, Drewyor was hit by a pitch and Clark walked to load the bases. With one out, Hamilton drew a walk to push Humeston home. Simmons hammered a two-out grounder to left field to score Drewyor and Clark. But the Warriors also would score three runs in the home half of the sixth to weather the storm.
Simmons had three hits in four plate appearances for Glen Oaks. He had singles in the second, fourth and sixth innings and drove in two runs.
Sam Dunleavy took the loss for the Vikings after allowing seven earned runs on four hits. McCullan Greene tossed the final two innings, allowing four earned runs on five hits with one strikeout.
