Lady Trailblazers tip-off Region 24 play with road win over Olney Central

OLNEY, Ill. – The VU women's basketball team has been busy lately, winning their third game in just five days Monday night against the Blue Knights of Olney Central, 70-62.

Vincennes got off to a hot start, jumping out to a quick 8-1 advantage. The seven-point margin would hold for most of the game as the two teams traded baskets back-and-forth.

The Lady Blazers would take a 31-23 lead into the locker room at halftime, led in the early stages by their sophomore guards Reeva Hammelman and Amani Brown, with Hammelman heading into the break with 10 points and Brown with 8.

Olney Central would continue to fight in the second-half but could never get on enough of a run to take the lead.

VU got some help late from guards Noni Russell and Shaila Beeler as the Lady Blazers captured their third win of the young season and second road win in less than a week.

Hammelman and Brown continued to lead the Blazers in the scoring column, with each finishing with 13 points, with Hammelman adding four rebounds, three assists and two steals.

Noni Russell and Shaila Beeler finished the game with 11 points each, with almost all coming in the second-half. Russell and Beeler also dished out three assists each and Beeler grabbed four rebounds.

Freshman Alexis Radcliff stepped into the starting lineup, replacing Macy Michels who suffered an ankle injury in the fourth quarter against Mineral Area Saturday. Radcliff is the fifth Lady Blazer to reach double-figures in the scoring column, finishing with 10 points and four boards.

Freshman Candela Lascorz controlled the boards when she was in the game on both ends, finishing with a team-high nine rebounds, four coming as offensive rebounds.

Vincennes will now turn their attention to Jefferson College, as VU will host Jeff Co. Saturday, Feb. 6. Tip-off at 7 p.m. eastern.

The Lady Blazers defeated Jefferson 72-68 Thursday, Jan. 28 at Hillsboro, Mo., in a game that saw VU utilize a third quarter scoring run to get the comeback win.
