Vols Baseball Cruises Past Kankakee CC 12-3

Carterville, IL – The Logan Volunteers cruised past the NJCAA D2 #15 Kankakee CC Cavaliers 12-3 on Friday to finish out a long week of games. The win puts the Vols at 11-1 on the year and capped a seven game in six days week. Logan will look to continue their hot start to the season on Wednesday when McKendree University travels to Carterville for a single game starting at 2 p.m.

The Vols offense got fired up in the first when Hunter Sullivan would single home Luke Brown to start a three run 1st inning. Sullivan and Brown would get things going again in the 3rd when once again Sullivan would score Brown after a leadoff single to push the Vols lead to 4-0.

The score would hold until the 6th when Kankakee would scratch across two runs against Vols Starter Austin Ruesch, but Jeffrey Purnell would come in and shut the door on the Cavs rally. Logan would get those runs back right away in the bottom half when Trent Shelby would connect for a 2-RBI triple and score two pitches later on a single from Gabe Schimpf to make the score 7-2. The Vols would push the game out of reach with three more runs in the 7th and two more in the 8th.

Austin Ruesch (2-0) would get the win for the Vols going 5.1 innings allowing two runs on four hits, while striking out nine. Jeffrey Purnell would pick up his second save of the season going 3.2 innings surrendering one run on two hits, while striking out five in relief.

The top of the lineup led the way for the Logan offense with Luke Brown, Hunter Sullivan, and Hunter Combs would all collect two hits. Trent Shelby had a big day as well, going 2-3 with two walks and three RBI. Zach Parks also found his way on base with three walks and three runs scored.
