Hankins’ Go-Ahead Single in 7th Sends Chargers to 1st Win

HARRISBURG — The Carl Sandburg College baseball team picked up its first win of the season Saturday as Payton Hankins' go-ahead hit in the seventh inning of Game 1 helped the Chargers to a split at Southeastern Illinois.

KEY MOMENTS
• With the Chargers trailing 4-2 in the third, Anthony Nino came through with a double that drove in Hankins and Austin Wiegand, knotting the score at 4-4.
• The Falcons regained the lead on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fifth. It stayed 5-4 into the seventh. Chase Mason led off the inning by reaching on an error, and Frank Kelch pushed him to third with a one-out double. Hankins then came through with a base hit to center, bringing home the tying and go-ahead runs. Nino followed with a single, and Will Prince added another base hit to plate Hankins for a key insurance run.

SANDBURG STANDOUT
In addition to his clutch hit, Hankins walked twice and scored all three times he reached base.

The Falcons put together a seven-run third inning behind six hits, a walk and two Chargers errors.

SANDBURG STANDOUT
Cameron Howard came on in relief to strike out five batters over two scoreless innings. Howard allowed one hit and one walk in the appearance.
