In a back-and-forth battle with John A. Logan College, it was Lamar State College Port Arthur that was left disappointed after a walk-off hit lifted the Vols to a 9-8 decision in the first day of the Sun Chiefs Classic in Gulf Shores, Alabama on Friday, February 14.

The 9-8 loss came in the ninth inning after both teams fought event through the first eight innings. The Seahawks scored first with a run in the first but fell behind by the end of the inning after John A. Logan scored three in the bottom half of the stanza. LSCPA added two in the top of the second, then held that lead after keeping the Volunteers scoreless in the bottom half of the second.

The Hawks added another run for a 4-3 lead but the Vols scored a run to tie it at 4-4 by the end of the third. It was an indicator of things to come.

LSCPA added two runs in the top of the fourth, matched by two by the Vols in the bottom half of the inning. The Seahawks scored one in the serventh and one in the eighth, tied each time by the Vols to push the game deeper into extra innings.

The Seahawks were unable to push a run hom in the top of the ninth and the Volunteers were able to take a sacrifice fly hit to left field for the winning run.

The Hawks outhit the Vols 13-9 but left 11 base runners stranded in the loss.

Freshman Maleia Taylor led the Seahawks at the plate, going 3 for 5 with a double, a run scored and a run batted in, while Erica Riley, Savannah Trahan and Celeste Salazar each added two hits. Sophomore Brooke Smith slapped a solo home run to center field for the Hawks. Freshman Erica Riley had two stolen bases.

Britni Hunt went the distance in the circle for the Seahawks, allowing six earned runs on nine hits with 11 strikeouts.
