Win over Kaskaskia pulls WVC to within one game in GRAC race

Nothing like a little threat of bench time to kick start an offense.

"We gave them a little spark, a little incentive," said Lady Warrior coach Zach Loll following his team's Great Rivers Athletic Conference victory over first-place Kaskaskia on Saturday.

Here's the form it took.

"I told our bigs that if they weren't going to get up and down the floor in transition, they weren't going to play," Loll said.

The move, or threat, worked as the Lady Warriors got back into the league race with a 71-61 victory at Spencer Sports Center.

WVC snapped a two-game GRAC slide in the process, and improved to 7-3 in the league and 13-7 overall. Kaskaskia fell to 9-2 in the conference and 17-6 on the season.

"We figured out again what it takes to win," Loll said. "We got a little complacent, and thought things would just fall into place for us."

The Lady Warriors, ahead 32-31 at halftime, pulled away with a 13-2 run that made it 58-44 with eight minutes left. Giorgia Stringer scored eight of the points in the surge.

"Stringer played well for us tonight," said Loll as he looked at her line on the stat sheet, which indicated 16 points and nine rebounds. "That's how she has to play.

Andriana Moore led WVC with 17 points, followed by Stringer's 16. D'Nell Greenwell added 10 points. Moore also collected eight rebounds in the crucial victory.

Kaskaskia was led by Brandi Riddle with 10 points.

The Lady Warriors play at Olney Central (10-13, 5-6) on Wednesday.
