CARTERVILLE – Sophomore guard Haley Darnell drained a jump shot from along the baseline with no time left on the clock Tuesday to lift the John A. Logan College women's basketball team to an improbable 71-69 win over visiting Southeastern Illinois.

The Goreville native finished with 12 points in all, including 5-of-9 from the field and 2-of-5 from beyond the arc.

Darnell said she cannot recall ever making a bigger basket.

"I don't think so," she said. "Certainly not a buzzer beater. Tonight, I wasn't really thinking about it too much. I just shot it and it went in. I was surprised they gave me the baseline shot."

Vols' first-year head coach Amanda Shelby said the plan was to take the ball to the rim.

"I figured they were either going to foul us, or we would get a good open shot. And that's what happened," Shelby said. "Haley didn't think about it. She just played ball and that worked to our advantage tonight."

With the victory, Logan remains unbeaten at 8-0. It's the first time Logan has gotten off to such a good start in 20 years.

The Vols now stand 3-0 in the Great Rivers Athletic Conference and in Region 24.

"It's great to be 8-0 right now," Shelby said. "I knew we had some talented freshmen, but we are still mostly freshmen, so you never know how fast they will adjust to the college game. Fortunately for us, these kids are developing fast. Tonight, we came out a little sluggish, but this team just never gives up. They battle all 40 minutes and I couldn't be prouder of them."

Logan was led in scoring by Tiaunna Watkins with 17 points. Kaili Bacon was also in double figures with 14. McKena Miller and Gabby Sanders dropped in eight points apiece.

The Falcons were led by Sheree English's 23 points. The Falcons were up 40-35 at the half and led by eight late before the Vols rallied.

Logan won the game despite turning the ball over 29 times. The Vols return to action at 5 p.m. next Wednesday, Dec. 2 at home against Lake Land.
